Pavan A. Gupte has been building businesses in the investing and credit space for the past 23 years, principally in Western Europe and Emerging Markets in global firms based out of Mumbai, London, Singapore and Dubai. He has been on various Investment and Management Committees managing private equity capital under full discretion for large institutional clients such as RBS Pension Plan, British Telecom Pension Scheme & Nationwide Insurance.
Mr. Gupte began his career in 1995 with ICICI Ltd. in its project finance division in Mumbai. In early 1997, he joined KBC Bank NV, where he helped build a corporate bank in India; by 2000, this became the largest profitable single-branch operation of a foreign bank in India. In end-2000, he joined a team at UBS AG in London, which spun out to form Adams Street Partners, a $7 bln AUM Private Equity business where he was part of the Global Investment Committee and was the Co-Head for Asia. In 2003, he joined Gartmore Private Equity, a division of Gartmore Asset Management and played a material role in growing the business over eight years from single-client, single capability, single-region $800m AUM business to a 25-person multi-client, multi-capability, multi-product $8+ bln AUM global private equity firm, Hermes GPE.
In mid-2011, Mr Gupte moved to Singapore to help spinout CVCI Private Equity, a Citibank division and a global emerging markets firm with 75 team members in 7 offices managing c.$7 bln, as its Chief Strategy Officer and Managing Director and as a member of the Global Management / Investment Committees.
In 2014, Mr. Gupte founded Bombay Central, a co-investment focused firm advising institutional clients such as Ontario Teachers Pension Plan, Pantheon Ventures and other global institutions & Family Offices on private investments across strategies, mainly in India.
In early 2016, Mr Gupte joined Samena Capital in Dubai as a Managing Director to re-structure it’s Indian Credit business and helped pivot the business towards private debt while raising the 1st institutional anchor capital for a new Indian Private Debt Fund. During 2017-2018, as a member of its Investment Committee, he helped invest growth capital and buy & build platforms in the healthcare, education, leisure and financial services businesses in India, China, S. Lanka & Myanmar from the $350 mln Samena Special Situations Fund III, besides leading its global marketing amongst institutional investors.
Mr Gupte holds a Bachelor’s degree in Accounting and Finance from N. M. College of Commerce & Economics and an MBA (Finance) from J. Bajaj Institute of Management Studies, Mumbai University. In addition, he has completed the Investment Management Certificate under the CFA Society, UK and the Executive Program in Private Equity at Harvard Business School, USA. He has been part of several Advisory Boards since 2004 and continues to be a speaker at several global investment forums and conferences.
